Technique: Cow Belly Breathing

In these exercises you inhale deeply and exhale making a ‘sch’ sound. Your belly will rise and expand like a bubble on inhale, which is why it is called ‘cow belly’ breath. These practices are particularly beneficial for warming up your vocal chords. You might use it before singing practice or before giving a speech or presentation. Complete ‘Cow Belly Breathing’ when you wake up every day, and later in the day as necessary. Try to repeat each exercise 6 times, but don’t worry if you can’t do it 6 times at first. 2-3 times is a good start and you can slowly build it up with practice. Start by preparing yourself. Breathe in for at least 6 seconds and then breathe out. Do this fifteen times until you feel relaxed.

Remember: Find a seated position or stand against the wall. You will produce some sounds, so find a place where you will be comfortable. Pay attention to how you feel and stop if you start feeling dizzy, light headed or out of breath.

Variation 1

1. Take a deep breath into your belly. 2. Breathe out making a ‘sch’ sound for as long as you can, emptying your lungs of any air. 3. At the end of your exhale, make a little ‘ch’ sound to ensure that your lungs are empty. 4. Wait for 5 seconds or until your body is ready and begin the breath again.

Variation 2

1. Take a deep breath into your belly. 2. Hold your breath for a moment. 3. Breathe out making 3 short and sharp ‘Sch’ sounds. With each ‘Sch’ feel your belly contract, drawing your belly button in. 4. Wait for 5 seconds or until your body is ready and begin the breath again.
